BOULDER – City Manager Jane Brautigam today announced that Dan Burke has been named Boulder’s Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) director effective Sept. 12. Burke has served as the interim director since May 2018.

“Dan has done an excellent job leading the department and in guiding its first-ever Master Plan process,” said Brautigam.  “With nearly 30 years of conservation management experience and his deep appreciation  for Boulder’s open space, he is well prepared to lead the department as we implement the Master Plan and partner with the community.”

During his tenure with the city, Burke served as OSMP’s interim director, interim deputy director and as the supervisor of OSMP’s Real Estate Services. Prior to joining Boulder, he served as executive director of the Door County Land Trust (DCLT), one of Wisconsin’s largest and most successful land conservation organizations.

Under Burke’s leadership, DCLT received Wisconsin Land Trust of the Year honors and Burke was recognized as Wisconsin’s Conservationist of the Year.  During his 20-year tenure as executive director, DCLT grew from a fledgling non-profit with under $100,000 in net assets to a nationally recognized $29 million land conservation organization. Before leading the DCLT, Burke served in various capacities for the Alliance for the Great Lakes (formerly, the Lake Michigan Federation) working to conserve and restore waters in the Lake Michigan watershed.

“During my interim role this past year I had the honor of helping lead our organization through the development and approval of the department’s first-ever Master Plan,” said Burke.  “Through this experience I gained such a deeper understanding and appreciation of our day-to-day work and the challenges and opportunities that are before us. I am confident that OSMP is well-poised to fulfill the expectations of the Master Plan, and I am thrilled to continue playing a leadership role in the stewardship of Boulder’s magnificent open space system.”

Burke earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Economics from the University of Wisconsin.
