Kitten Meets Family Dog and Insists on Cuddling Her Everywhere She Goes

November 14, 2019 in Cats

A dog took on the role of primary caregiver to a kitten who had just lost her brother. The two became inseparable friends.

Kristin Loh

Kristin Loh, a volunteer of Cat Haven WA (in Western Australia), took in two rescued kittens that needed foster care.

They were in rough shape and just half the size for their age. The bigger kitty Ciara survived while her brother Tommy sadly lost his fight. After the passing of her sibling, Ciara couldn’t bear a second of being alone and would cry nonstop until she found company.

“I thought maybe I could socialize her with my dogs so she would feel better,” Kristin told Love Meow.

Kristin Loh

On the day she introduced Ciara to her canine crew, the kitten didn’t hesitate – she ran right up to the dogs, rubbing all over them. She was so thrilled to meet other furry friends and just wanted to be loved.

Gucci the Pomeranian immediately took a liking to the little feline and started licking her.

Kristin Loh

Ciara perked up to the love she received, leaning over to Gucci and melting into her warm fluff.

The tabby girl insisted on following her friend everywhere around the house, clinging to her like Velcro. They started to nap together and spend all day cuddling and playing.

Kristin Loh

Sweet Gucci cares for the kitten like her own and wouldn’t let her out of eyeshot. Ciara refuses to be anywhere but next to her best friend.

In less than two weeks, the kitten has really blossomed.

Kristin Loh

She’s gained weight and energy and is getting more playful each day.

Now that Ciara has caught up in size, she is starting to pick up some canine skills while trying to hone her feline craft.

Kristin Loh

“She barked once, and we were all in shock. Perhaps she thinks she’s a puppy as she grew up with my dogs,” Kristin told Love Meow.

Watch these two best friends in this cute video:

After playtime, Ciara curls up next to her best friend and falls fast asleep.

Kristin Loh

The tabby cat is thriving and growing by leaps and bounds.

Having her best friend around makes her happy and content. They are together almost 24/7.

Kristin Loh

“I’m so glad for my dog to assist me in this foster process. The constant warmth and care from my dog is just amazing,” Kristin told Love Meow.

“I’m grateful to witness such a bond and love from the two of them.”

iHeartCats works closely with the Greater Good by donating part of each sale to various charity efforts. Thanks to cat lovers like you, so many cats will go on to find their very own happy ending.

The Liberty Humane Society in Jersey City, NJ has just finished a major renovation to their cat room, and it’s all because of you.

The shelter staff at the Liberty Humane Society are dedicated to seeking liberty for all furry friends that step foot in the door. With Lady Liberty herself looking down on this shelter, there’s no doubt that incredible things happen within their walls.

While this shelter prides themselves in their ability to change the lives of many, they ran into a huge dilemma during their recent renovation. While they were able to upgrade the rest of the shelter, they fell short on funds when it came to creating a fun new space for their cats.

When it looked like they were out of options, GreaterGood.org’s Rescue Rebuild Program came to the rescue!

With the help of local volunteers, Rescue Rebuild got to work on a number of projects all around the cat room. With a creative new design from Kate Benjamin of Hauspanther, the team worked together to build in impressive cat suite that welcomes visitors with open arms.

The Rescue Rebuild team started with practical renovations such as new tile, a fresh new coat of paint, and cleanable wall surfaces. They also worked to build new spaces for storage, giving the cats more room to roam freely!

Next came the fun part, where they created a new wall to divide the previous space into more rooms, and built a number of cubbies, perches, and even a bridge for their feline friends to enjoy.

If this wasn’t enough, the Rescue Rebuild team also built 36 portals into the cat cages, which allows them to have a completely separate space from their food and litter. This move has been proven to increase cat adoptions, and shorten their length of stay in shelters.

The finished product is an impressive cat suite that is so adorable, visitors will never want to leave; without a new adopted friend that is. There’s no doubt that the hard work of the Rescue Rebuild team will result in the adoption of many cats to come.

Thank you to the dedicated volunteers on this project, and the staff at the Liberty Humane Society for continuing to save lives!

Beautiful Odd Eyed Kitten Rescued from Roadside, Doesn’t Want to Be Alone Again

November 13, 2019 in Cats

Nova the kitten was found on the side of the road by a Good Samaritan. This odd-eyed beauty is determined to never be alone again.

Coastal Bend Cat Rescue

A kind-hearted person spotted a kitten lying on the roadside in Corpus Christi, Texas. She was in rough shape, curled up in a little ball, and barely moving.

The listless kitten was rushed to a veterinary clinic, where she was given fluids and brought back from the brink. When the kitty (named Nova) began to perk up, they noticed something different about her — Nova showed signs of a neurological condition.

They reached out to Coastal Bend Cat Rescue, a cat rescue team in Corpus Christi, for help. “We took her in as soon as we could secure a medical foster home opening,” Lindsay Haglund, Foster Coordinator of Coastal Bend Cat Rescue, told Love Meow.

Coastal Bend Cat Rescue

Besides being a bit wobbly, Nova was also diagnosed with hydrocephalus, or “water on the brain.”

“We are carefully observing her and providing the best medical care that we can afford. We have all fallen in love with Nova and believe this girl deserves a fighting chance at life.”

Coastal Bend Cat Rescue

Nova is always in good spirits and definitely a people-cat. She adores her foster family and demands their attention whenever she gets a chance.

“Her favorite moments are being held and snuggled by humans,” Lindsay added. “She loves to be carried around like a baby and gets scared and confused when she is left alone.”

Coastal Bend Cat Rescue

To accommodate her every need, Nova’s foster mom often keeps her stowed comfortably in her pocket and carries her everywhere she goes.

At night, Nova insists on sharing the same bed with her humans. They often wake up to a purring kitty, snuggling on their shoulder or stretching out across the center of their bed.

Coastal Bend Cat Rescue

“Her foster family brings her wherever they go so that she doesn’t have to be alone. Everybody who meets her falls in love! She is easily overstimulated but also dislikes being alone, so we make special accommodations for her when traveling.

“She craves the comfort of human companionship in a comfortable environment. Nova is such a lucky kitten, and we are simply smitten with her!”

Coastal Bend Cat Rescue

Having a feline friend may help her figure out her surroundings and learn to be a cat.

“She needs constant guidance and reassurance because her sensory response is elevated and very sensitive,” Lindsay told Love Meow.

Coastal Bend Cat Rescue

The rescue group plans to pair her up with another kitty once she gets the “all clear” from the vet.

As of now, sweet Nova is hogging all the attention from everyone she meets, and soaking up the love from countless cuddles.

Coastal Bend Cat Rescue

“Our collective team has fostered thousands of kittens over the years, and she is the most unique we have ever encountered,” Lindsay said.

“She has captured our hearts forever.”

Woman Finds Out That Her Cat Has Been Living A Double Life

November 13, 2019 in Cats

Cat double life

Pixie is an incredibly sweet cat that lives in Mexico with his owner, Mary Lore Barra. Though Pixie comes and goes as he pleases, his owner couldn’t have ever imagined the secret this furry friend had!

Pixie first came into Mary Lore Barra’s life about 2 years ago when he showed up on her porch as a small kitten. Being the avid animal lover that she is, she readily took in the tiny kitten. As his sweet personality blossomed over the years, so did his love of adventure.

Pixie now comes and goes as he pleases, munching on kibble and soaking up cuddle time when he makes his appearance. Though Mary had always assumed he was just out exploring, she would soon find out that he was up to much more.

One day, Pixie returned to Mary’s house wearing a brand new collar that she had never seen before. Not only was he sporting a shiny new collar, but he was beginning to look more and more plump as the days went on.

Mary knew it was time to get to the bottom of her feline friend’s mysterious life.

That’s when she grabbed a pen and a piece of paper and wrote, “My name is Pixi the cat. I think he has two houses haha.”

She then attached the note to his collar and waited for his double life to finally catch up with him! He then set off as he usually does, while Mary waited for his return.

Pixie showed up a few days later as he normally does, but this time he came back with another note. His other family had responded to Mary’s note!

The note read, “Here he is called Huarache. It appears that he does have two houses haha. Greetings!”

cat double life
Mary Lore Barra/Facebook

It was official. Pixie/Huarache was living an elaborate double life. This plump kitty was getting double the love and double the food. He was living the feline dream.

The two families have since exchanged a few more notes back and forth, where Mary explains how Pixie is fully vetted, just in case they attempt to take him in for additional vaccines. They’ve even joked about how their part time child has since gone viral for the unraveling of his elaborate ruse.

Pixie/Huarache is lucky to have two incredible homes that don’t mind sharing his love.

We wonder what else this sneaky cat is hiding!

This Restaurant Goes Above & Beyond For Their Favorite Feline Friend

November 13, 2019 in Cats

If you happen to visit the Denny’s in Eugene, Oregon you will probably meet an adorable furry friend. For the past 10 years, this restaurant has gone above and beyond for an affectionate stray cat that needed a place to call home.

Dennys, or Denns for short, has been living in a cozy set up outside of this diner for the last decade. The frightened cat showed up at the restaurant door years ago, looking for food and a warm place to sleep. The staff fed him and gave him water thinking he was lost, but soon noticed that this adorable friend never left.

Multiple staff members and customers have attempted to take him home over the years, but he adamantly refuses to be picked up. He truly loves his setup outside of the popular restaurant, and that’s eventually how he received his name.

Once it became clear that Denns was there for the long haul, they made sure to create a warm and cozy area just for him. As he grew in popularity, his “bedroom” became more and more lush.

Laura Leader first met Denny’s when she visited the restaurant a few years back. Once she learned of their furry resident, she knew she had to join the support to help keep him safe and fed.

“The restaurant adopted him. Patrons built him a house. New blankets are brought to him regularly. Someone brings their own personal heating lamp for him in the winter. All of his needs are met — he is cared for dearly. He is seen regularly by a vet, and he is constantly supervised.” – Leader

Denny’s adorable hideout has brought in customers all over town and has continued to be a hit with cat lovers alike. The booth looking over his cozy area is especially popular, as guests love to spy on his daily cuteness.

As Denny’s gets older, customers and staff have vowed to keep a closer eye on him. With his frequent vet visits and daily hands on care, they’ll be sure to keep him healthy and thriving as long as possible.

“Everyone here cares, and they always have more love to give. And the remarkable thing about Mr. Denns is that he gives that love right back. It’s a huge, beautiful loop that demonstrates the relationships between humans and animals, and also from human to human. To see that we can show this kind of kindness to a loving animal, perhaps we can show it to each other?” – Leader

The love that this community has shown Denns is incredible, and we are so glad that he has a comfortable space to call his own! If you’d like to donate to the fund  for Denny’s continued care, you can contribute here.

Cat Throws A Hissy Fit When His Mom Dresses As A Cat For Halloween

November 13, 2019 in Cats

Cats can get angry over the silliest things sometimes, but this cat has a perfectly good excuse for being upset. With Halloween approaching, his mom had to pick the perfect costume.

Since she is a cat lover, what could be better than a cute cat costume to match her cat? She was all dressed up and ready for the spooky holiday, but it turned out, her cat was not amused at all.

“I was dressed up as a cat for Halloween, and discovered that my cat didn’t like my cat ears,” said his mom. “He looked really freaked out, and looked like he was going to pounce on me until I took the ears off. Then, he went back to normal as if nothing happened.”

Image: Screenshot, ViralHog YouTube

The Scaredy-Cat’s Viral Video

A video of the cat’s reaction to his mother’s costume recently went viral. At the beginning of the video, the girl is happily petting her furry friend, and the cat seems to be enjoying her company. The girl is dressed in a black cat outfit, but she hasn’t put on the finishing touch yet.

After giving her cat some attention, the girl completes her Halloween costume by putting on some matching cat ears. As soon as the cat sees her, his ears go down and he looks at her in disgust. Then, he slowly begins backing away while continuing to give her a skeptical glare.

Image: Screenshot, ViralHog YouTube

Throughout this entire exchange, his mom can’t help but laugh. It’s almost as if the cat doesn’t recognize her. What a difference a great costume can make, especially for a cat apparently.

After the cat has walked to the other side of his mom to get a better look at her, she laughs one last time and takes the ears off. As soon as those ears are gone, the cat perks back up and returns to requesting attention from her. He acts as if nothing even happened at all.

It is not clear why the cat disliked the costume so much. Maybe he didn’t like his mom dressing up like him. Maybe he just didn’t want her to dress differently. Whatever the reason, it is clear that he loves her and the ears just startled him. Halloween can be a strange time for cats and dogs, so it is understandable that he was a little confused. Although he’s probably hoping that she uses a different, less frightening costume next year!

Kitten Painted Red And Blue Is Rescued And Given Freedom

November 13, 2019 in Cats

If someone has to surrender an animal, there is a certain way to do it. Dropping them outside the door when the shelter is closed for the day is not one of them. A poor kitten was left like this at a rural shelter in Arizona.

The kitten was brought to the Arizona Animal Welfare League through their Rural Outreach program. Right away, they discovered that this poor kitten had been painted!

The black and white kitten had red and blue spots of paint all over her body, which made it clear that she went through some rough times. The shelter isn’t exactly sure what happened to her, but they have some ideas. Now that she’s safe from her past though, they decided to name her Freedom.

Image: Screenshot, Arizona Animal Welfare YouTube

What Could a Painted Cat Mean?

Paint might not seem like the worst form of animal abuse, but any type of fur coloring that is not safe for animals could cause harm to a cat. Therefore, without knowing why Freedom was painted, it is difficult to tell what underlying health effects she could have as a result.

There are a lot of possible reasons as to why kittens are painted. It is possible that some kids did it when a parent wasn’t closely watching them, or it could be something much worse.

Image: Screenshot, Arizona Animal Welfare YouTube

Sometimes, cats are used as “bait animals” in dog fighting rings. This is a horrible thing to imagine, but sometimes people will paint the fur of the cats so people can place bets on them.

Freedom seems too healthy to have been in that situation, but you really never know. Either way, it is clear that she was not properly cared for in the past. The shelter plans to do everything they can to help her though.

A Future for Freedom

Image: Screenshot, Arizona Animal Welfare YouTube

Currently, Freedom appears to be healthy beyond the paint stains, but the staff at AAWL are still observing her regularly to make sure no issues arise. She has made a quick recovery so far, and she is actually very cuddly and loves being pet by the staff members.

“We are fortunate that Freedom is healthy and very social but she is still under the observation of our medical team to ensure there are no underlying issues,” said Michael Morefield, the shelter communications director.

The staff checked, but they did not find a tag or microchip on Freedom. So, once they are sure she is healthy, she will be up for adoption. She hopes to find a loving home to give her a space to heal, and luckily, there are already families that are interested in her!

Cat is So Happy When Rescuer Stops to Help Her and Her Kittens Just in Time

November 12, 2019 in Cats

A Good Samaritan rescued a homeless cat from the street, but little did she know, the cat didn’t come alone.

Chatons Orphelins Montréal

Claire from Montreal, Canada was on her way to work two months ago, when she spotted a calico under a car. She wasn’t sure if the cat belonged to someone. But when she returned around noon, the cat was still there, standing alone on a corner.

The little feline was very scared but didn’t run away when Claire tried to approach her, as if she wanted to be helped.

Claire gently scooped her up and took her back to the office in a quiet room. After getting her some food and water, the sweet calico was finally able to relax and get some much-needed rest.

Chatons Orphelins Montréal

Later that day, Claire asked around the neighborhood to see if someone was missing a cat. A few neighbors said they had seen the kitty roam around the area, but no one came to claim her.

By the evening, Claire decided to take it upon herself and get the kitty the help she needed.

Chatons Orphelins Montréal

She took the cat on a trip to the vet.

They couldn’t find a microchip but discovered a little surprise — the calico was pregnant, and the vet felt three little babies inside her belly.

Hadrian, Claire’s friend, offered to give the kitty a home to stay, and contacted a local rescue group, Chatons Orphelins Montréal, for help.

Chatons Orphelins Montréal

“Hadrian offered to foster her so she could have a safe place to have kittens. She was named Ciboulette,” Celine Crom of Chatons Orphelins Montréal told Love Meow.

The calico quickly came out of her shell and adjusted to the indoor life. She was no longer scared and could walk around confidently with her tail held high.

Shortly after her arrival, she began to ask for attention and affection from her human friends. “The first night, she started to purr and became very comfortable around her foster family.”

Chatons Orphelins Montréal

On October 2nd, Hadrian heard incessant meows coming from the kitty room. “Ciboulette was looking for her foster dad as she was going into labor,” Celine said. “It reassured her to have someone she trusts by her side.”

That night, she gave birth to three beautiful, healthy kittens (with extra toes), Minici, Arbok and Mary.

Chatons Orphelins Montréal

Ciboulette never left her kittens, caring for them around the clock. Hadrian brought her food and water to keep her replenished. After scarfing down a full plate of pate, she fell asleep with with her little ones by her side.

The sweet mama purrs up a storm and stretches her toes blissfully while her kittens are nursing away.

Chatons Orphelins Montréal

The polydactyl kittens have blossomed in size and personality.

Watch this adorable family in this video:

They have taken over their humans’ bed and constantly run around the room like they own it.

“The little family is well taken care of by their foster dad.”

Chatons Orphelins Montréal

“Arbok (ginger and white) is very adventurous and loves to play and explore. Minici (calico) is quiet but full of sass. Mary the ginger is the calmest of all. She likes to climb anything in her way.”

Chatons Orphelins Montréal

“The kittens (now at five weeks) are healthy and plump,” Celine said.

“They are starting to learn to eat on their own, but still go to their mom for snacks throughout the day.”

Cat Dad Howard Stern and Wife Open Feline Adoption Center

November 12, 2019 in Cats

Famed radio personality Howard Stern has developed a reputation as a shock-jock, a sometimes polarizing cultural commentator, and…cat lover?

That’s right. Stern and his wife Beth made quite the show of support for cats recently when they played a big role in getting a special feline facility open at an animal shelter in New York. But feline love is nothing new to the Sterns.

A Couple on a Mission

Beth, an avowed life-long lover of animals of all kinds, is the spokesperson for North Shore Animal League America, an enormous no-kill animal rescue and adoption organization in New York.

The Sterns have fostered cats in conjunction with the Animal League for about five years now. But this October, they took it a step further by partnering with the League to open “Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center.”

@bethostern/Instagram

The state-of-the-art facility, which has had its ribbon cutting and is very near to being ready to be open to the public, was the brainchild of the Sterns. The center’s namesake is Bianca the bulldog, the first furry family member the couple had together. Beth says “she was the love of our lives.” She passed away in 2012, and honoring her memory has been the motivating factor in Howard and Beth’s animal rescue work ever since.

Free-range Felines

Bianca’s Furry Friends (BFF) Feline Adoption Center is a cage-free facility where cats and kittens can roam free in enriched and comfortable, low-stress environments, in the hopes that they will become happy, healthy, socialized cats whose personalities can shine through, unlike at the majority of shelters where they are caged, stressed and afraid, and less likely to attract adopters.

At BFF they are in rooms where they are free to run, play, socialize and canoodle with other cats.

A Need Noticed

So how did Howard Stern go from deejay to bulldog lover to cat dad? Beth says for essentially the entire time she and Howard have been married, she has volunteered at North Shore Animal League America. And she noticed that “the cats were the ones that weren’t getting adopted as quickly as the dogs and the puppies.” So she felt her time and she and Howard’s resources would be best served going towards helping unhoused cats.

@bethostern/Instagram

Around that time, she discovered the world of fostering. Her first go-round was a mother and her litter from a municipal shelter.

Beth says she took them home “and Howard was on board. He loved the experience so much. We nurtured this mother cat and kittens and got them all adopted, and we never stopped.”

1,000 Cats Helped

The Sterns estimate that 1,000 cats have passed through their home. They often have over 20 foster cats in their home at a time—in addition to their five resident cats. Beth says she and Howard wake up at four every morning. Howard takes off for the radio studio, and she gets started on her daily rounds of feeding, litter box-cleaning, cat socializing and administering medication where needed.

Instagram is the platform on which her work is done. She posts pictures and videos of each available cat, those seriously interested in adopting may email her, she screens them, and then has the Animal League make the ultimate decision of which adopter is the best fit for each cat. Beth says she hand-delivers as many of the cats as she can.

@bethostern/Instagram

She says it’s always difficult to say goodbye to these little ones who have been in their home. “I cry every time. It never gets easier,” she says.

To lift her spirits and to continue the mission, she will often stop by a shelter on the way back home and pick up more cats in need.

Team Effort

The only problem Howard poses to all this? He wants to keep them all! Says Beth, “I have to be the strong one and say ‘No, we have our resident cats, these we’ve found great homes for.’ But every time I bring one in and he spends time with them, he goes, ‘Let’s keep this one! I want this one!’”

@bethostern/Instagram

So Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center has been a long time coming. The Sterns are excited for the work it will do to help more cats find forever families.

Present with the Sterns at the ribbon cutting for BFF were cat lovers Rachael Ray and Billy Joel. They both have rooms named after them at the facility.

See Beth’s Instagram account featuring her, Howard, their resident cats and the dozens currently available as their fosters, at @bethostern.

Bianca’s Furry Friends Feline Adoption Center is an addition to North Shore Animal League America’s Port Washington, New York campus.

A Face Born to Raise Awareness, Toby the Cat is Purr-fectly Adorable

November 11, 2019 in Cats

Every cat has a trait which makes them stand out. It might be a tabby’s cinnamon bun swirl, a tuxedo’s curly whisker, or maybe even a certain flick of the ear by a precocious ginger. Toby the cat is no exception, but his unique look is caused by a little-known condition that affects animals as well as people.

@tummyandgummy/Instagram

Toby’s sagging skin is a result of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, or EDS. When dealing with cats, EDS is also known as Feline Cutaneous Asthenia, simply put FCA.

Toby’s mom, Georgina Price, told Love Meow, “It means that his body doesn’t produce collagen properly. It doesn’t heal as well as it should and scars very easily.”

@tummyandgummy/Instagram

Improper collagen production can affect the body’s joints, connective tissues, and, in Toby’s case, the skin. His skin lacks elasticity and hangs quite heavy. Georgina and her fiancé, Christopher Lardner, are concerned how the natural progression of age will affect Toby’s mobility. In the meantime, the six-year-old tabby is a dapper cat in his special collars and shirts.

@tummyandgummy/Instagram

More than a Fashion Statement

Since Toby’s skin tears easily, normal grooming can cause painful lacerations. His adorable outfits and puffy collars help to minimize damage. From making Toby’s wardrobe to performing wound care on the squirmy cat, Georgina and Christopher go to great lengths to ensure Toby stays healthy and happy. A recent post on Instagram reveals they are considering nail caps to keep Toby from tearing open his skin.

@tummyandgummy/Instagram

Whatever the fur parents are up to, their main focus is doing what’s right for Toby.

“Despite whatever it is that may make them ‘special needs’ they are still beautiful animals with their own amazing personalities, likes, dislikes, and the ability to love you back,” Georgina said in an interview with Meow.AF.

@tummyandgummy/Instagram

Toby and his brother, Quinton, have lived the good life since finding their forever home with Georgina and Christopher. Adopted from the RSPCA of England, both handsome cats have special needs. Quinton had to have his teeth removed upon rescue and Toby’s skin adds a degree of difficulty to life, but according to Georgina, “It doesn’t take anymore to love them.”

@tummyandgummy/Instagram

@tummyandgummy/Instagram

Though Toby the EDS cat is often mistaken for a sad cat, he is truly the happiest of cats. In fact, he told his social media fan base, “I thought I better show you my beautiful smile so you can see how happy I am!”

@tummyandgummy/Instagram

Living with special needs cats isn’t always easy, but together the family overcomes one obstacle at a time, always keeping love in their hearts. Judging by Toby’s smile, his parents are taking amazing care of Toby and Quinton.

@tummyandgummy/Instagram

Animals and People Alike

Animals and humans can both suffer from EDS. In fact, Lena Dunham recently spoke out regarding her battles with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, becoming one of the few celebrities who have opened up about their journeys with the genetic disorder. No offense to the celebrities, but Toby brings a new level of cuteness to EDS awareness.

@tummyandgummy/Instagram

Follow Toby and Quinton on their journey to show the world what love and support can do for those battling chronic conditions, furry and human alike.
