Chris Hunichen overcame a field of 540 entries to win the 2019 European Poker Tour Barcelona €10,300 no-limit hold’em high roller event, winning the title and the top payout of €841,345 ($933,893 USD) after striking a deal heads-up. The score was the largest of the American poker pro’s career, and it brought his lifetime live earnings to more than $6.5 million.

Hunichen managed to achieve this huge victory despite the fact that he had received a bevy of bad news upon his arrival in Barcelona for the EPT series:

In addition to securing the title and the massive payday, Hunichen was also awarded 2,100 Card Player Player of the Year points for the win. This was Hunichen’s first title and fourth final-table finish of the year. The score was enough to see him climb into 35th place in the 2019 POY race standings, which are sponsored by Global Poker.

Hunichen came into the final day of this event in 21st chip position with 26 players remaining, all of whom were already in the money. By the time the field was narrowed to just nine competitors, Hunichen had climbed into fourth place on the leaderboard. He moved even higher in the standings after winning a race with ADiamond SuitKHeart Suit against the 4Diamond Suit4Club Suit of Jack Salter to eliminate him in ninth place ($98,257 USD).

The eventual champion’s next knockout came with six remaining. He once again found himself in a preflop coinflip situation, with his AClub SuitQClub Suit up against the 9Diamond Suit9Club Suit of Lander Lijo. The queen-high flop gve Hunichen a lead which he never relinquished and Lijo was sent to the rail in sixth place ($240,704 USD).

Uri Reichenstein knocked out Andreas Berggren Berggreb in third place ($501,187 USD) to enter heads-up play with 11,725,000 to Hunichen’s 15,250,000. The two struck a deal that saw Reichenstein lock up $881,801 USD while Hunichen secured $933,893 USD and the trophy.

Here is a look at the payouts and POY points awarded at the final table:
