Boulder residents and community members are invited to meet a candidate for director of the city’s planning director position next week.

Sam Assefa, currently the director of the Office of Planning & Community Development in Seattle, will be in Boulder for an open house from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Aug. 29, according to a news release. The meeting will be held in the Municipal Building lobby at 1777 Broadway.

He will be interviewed by city leadership, Planning Board representatives and Planning staff.

Assefa was the senior urban designer for Boulder from 2010 to 2016, where he was responsible for urban and building design policies, managed design procedures and directed sustainable projects.

He has held several positions over his career, including deputy chief of staff to the mayor of Chicago and senior urban designer in San Francisco.

“Our goal is to find the most qualified director who reflects the community’s planning values and who can effectively manage the complexities of Boulder’s process to implement our Boulder Valley Comprehensive Plan,” said City Manager Jane Brautigam in the release. “Mr. Assefa offers a unique opportunity for Boulder because he has broad experience and familiarity with our community, the planning processes and the importance of community engagement.”
