James Kalm is out for his usual Sunday constitutional in Brooklyn, and it being late in August, not expecting many local art venues to be open. Chatting with fellow art heads, your correspondent is tipped off to a closing for a pop-up show in Bushwick. Dennis Beach’s “Spatial Approximations” impresses Kalm, and the artist generously agrees to an impromptu interview and tour. Beach’s work melds painting and sculpture with high keyed color. He employs a formidable sense of craftsmanship, and a reductive sense of design. Though influenced by Minimalism and Hard-Edge abstraction, Beach infuses these notions with a natural grace and the curves and repeating patterns one might find present in wind swept snow drifts or sandbars. Recorded August 30, 2015 in Bushwick Brooklyn.
