Family fears woman charged in hot car death won’t face trial

He loved trains, and his great grandfather says his laughter was infectious, but the family of Logan Starling, 4, is fearing the worst – that there will be no trial for the woman accused of leaving him in a hot car for hours until his death.WESH 2 News spoke with the child’s great grandfather about an unexpected court date that is on Wednesday.”My concern is that she’s going to walk with probation. It’s a slap on the wrist to her and it’s a spit in the face to my family, not to mention, to big man, Logan,” said Roy Werner, Logan Starling’s great grandfather.Mariah Butler, of Taft, faces charges of child neglect and aggravated manslaughter. Authorities said she left the 4-year-old, her boyfriend’s son, locked inside a hot vehicle for more than six hours in September of last year.”I thought it would go to trial, maybe a plea bargain, but not just probation. We we were told on a phone call from the state attorney’s office,” Werner said.WESH 2 News has not confirmed that Butler will receive probation, but the clerk’s office shows a plea hearing is scheduled for 4 p.m. Wednesday.Surveillance video from Elite Preparatory Academy shows that on September 28, 2018, Butler and her mother were with four children entering the school.Werner said little Logan loved trains, and playing on the swings and in the pool.”He said, ‘I love you big papa.’ I said, ‘I love you more, Logan, I love you the mostest,'” Werner said.Werner said he just wants justice for Logan.”I just hope and pray the judge sees something is wrong with this, because I certainly do,” he said.
