All of South Florida’s public schools and non-profit colleges will be closed Tuesday as the threat of Hurricane Dorian remains

That’s Miami-Dade County Public Schools; Broward County Public Schools; Miami-Dade College; FIU; University of Miami; Barry University; St. Thomas University and Florida Atlantic University.

Oh, FIU students staying on campus, one place to eat will remain open: The 8th Street Campus Kitchen and Market at Breezeway.

Several schools announced their Tuesday closing on Sunday, the last being MDCPS. At a Sunday afternoon news conference, superintendent Alberto Carvalho said there would be no classes or activity on Tuesday for three reasons:

“An abundance of caution” about the violent, capricious Hurricane Dorian, which is up to 185 mph sustained winds.

Broward County Public Schools already had decided on staying closed Tuesday and “20 percent of our workforce resides in Broward County.”

Even if just outer tropical storm bands slap Miami-Dade, that means winds over 39 mph. Carvalho said it’s unsafe in those winds for 1,000 school buses to roll, as well as expecting children to walk to school or even the bus stop.

Much of Broward and Palm Beach counties were placed under a tropical storm watch on Sunday morning. The city of Fort Lauderdale, along with surrounding municipalities such as Pembroke Pines, Plantation and Tamarac, could expect wind gusts of 39-73 mph by Tuesday.

As of 1 p.m. Sunday, Miami-Dade County Public Schools were scheduled to reopen as normal on Tuesday, Sept. 3, after the holiday weekend.
