One person was injured Tuesday night when a fire started inside the Wellman Canal, near 30th Street and Colorado Avenue.

Authorities were notified of the fire at approximately 10:45 p.m. The canal is near the University of Colorado Boulder.

According to Scott Pribble, a public information officer with University of Colorado Boulder, one person, who police believe was inside the canal, was transported to the hospital. Pribble said he did not know the extent of their injuries.

Pribble said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

As of 11:40 p.m., police and fire remained on scene to continue to assess damage. The fire prompted the closure of 30th Street northbound from Colorado Avenue to Arapahoe Avenue. It was unknown how long the road would be closed.

The Boulder Fire Department and police from University of Colorado Boulder responded to the scene.
