It has been the backdrop for countless photos, an iconic structure that sits high on the mountain.

Now, the sign atop Mammoth Mountain could be yours — for the right price.

The summit sign, set up on the mountain top at 11,000 feet, where the gondola unloads skiers, snowboarders and those who want to take in the scenic view, is being replaced because of wear and tear over the past two decades.

Last spring, the sign was cut down about five feet to remove damage. But the time has come to fully replace it, according to Mammoth Mountain officials.

But why toss such a historic monument in the trash or burn it?

Instead, the mountain resort is auctioning the original 14-foot summit sign, with proceeds benefiting the Mammoth Mountain Community Foundation, which provides programs and financial aid for youth athletics in the Eastern Sierra.

The auction will run for seven days, ending at noon Wednesday, Oct. 23. The current high bid is $20,000.
