A Local Assistance Center opened Tuesday, Oct. 15, in Calimesa for victims of the Sandalwood fire, which claimed two lives and destroyed 76 homes when Santa Ana winds pushed it through a mobile home park in the city last week.

The 1,011-acre fire was 100% contained Monday evening.

The assistance center is located at the Calimesa Senior Center, 908 Park Ave. in Calimesa.

The center includes help with social services, senior support, veteran services, housing placement, utilities, state taxes, postal services, Department of Motor Vehicles, California Department of Insurance, Riverside County Assessor-County Clerk/Recorder, and aid from organizations such as the Red Cross and Salvation Army.

Hours of operation are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Officials said the center would stay open as long as there is a need.
