On October 12th, several threads about the photographs were made on 4chan‘s /tv/ and other boards, with users criticizing Billie Eilish’s body. Two threads posted in /tv/ on that day received over 240 and over 80 replies, respectively (screenshots shown below).

Later on the same day, Twitter user @GamesNosh tweeted one of the photographs of Eilish, writing “in 10 months Billie Eilish has developed a mid-30’s wine mom body,” with the tweet gaining over 930 retweets, 12,400 quotes, 8,800 likes and 7,300 replies in three days (tweet shown below).

The tweet prompted viral reaction on Twitter, with multiple users making posts in defense of Eilish and accusing @GamesNosh of body shaming. For example, an October 13th, 2020, tweet by Twitter user @jodieporl received over 30,200 retweets and 285,800 likes in two days (shown below, left). A same-day tweet by user @jessiepaege received over 6,800 retweets and 44,600 likes in the same period (shown below, right).

On the same day, Billie Eilish reposted an Instagram video “Can we normalize real bodies??” by user chiziduru in her Instagram story (story screenshot and original post shown below).

In the following days, the controversy was covered by a number of media outlets.
