Waikiki Brewing Company just started a weekend brunch menu in lieu of the NFL football season, where one of their menu items for that is Biscuits ‘n Gravy. OMG, you don’t know how much I ADORE a great Biscuits ‘n Gravy, so I just had to try their take on it.
Admittedly, I wasn’t impressed, as good as it sounded on paper. Interestingly, one of their kitchen staff said I could easily make own using a canned sausage gravy you can find at most grocery stores, so I said, “shoots!”, let’s go look for that!
Of all places, I found just that at the nearby “Koreamoku” Walmart, for about $2 a can. This is it….
I already had a frozen package of Pillsbury Buttermilk Biscuits, ready-to-bake in my freezer, so with that, I was set on some instant Biscuits ‘n Gravy…
And voila, canned Biscuits ‘n Country Sausage Gravy, a fresh, locally-farmed sunny-side up Kalei Egg, garnished with chopped Italian Parsley, Chives and Green Onions…
And? Nah. It didn’t pass my standard for a GREAT Biscuits ‘n Gravy. Mainly, this particular Libby’s brand canned gravy was weak in flavor, where the breakfast sausage itself didn’t have any flavor. The gravy itself was also on the thin side, where I like my sausage gravy THICK.
The Pillsbury Buttermilk Biscuits itself were great, and would have probably been ideal served by itself simply with lots of butter and jelly.
The best part on this plate was that fresh sunny-side up Kalei Egg. Can’t go wrong with that!
Next time I make Biscuits ‘n Gravy, the gravy itself will definitely be made from SCRATCH!
