IDAHO FALLS – If you don’t use it, you lose it.

This is a principle Terra Smout lives by. She’s learned how important muscle strength is for daily tasks and how quickly people lose it as they get older. She’s dedicated her life to helping other women build strength and increase confidence through her private gym, Kova Fitness, at 440 West 15th Street in Idaho Falls. See how it works in the video above.

Since launching the business in 2020, the 33-year-old Boise native has helped dozens of clients identify their fitness needs and devise a plan to achieve their goals.

“The amount of moving comments we get every week is incredible,” Smout tells EastIdahoNews.com.

The business offers one-on-one training, small group classes and a “Better with age” class for older women. Each type of training is geared around helping participants achieve personal goals.

Smout moved to Idaho Falls with her husband, Dustin, about 10 years ago after taking a job as a P.E. teacher in Idaho Falls School District 91. But her passion for fitness stems back to childhood.

Smout says there wasn’t anything in particular that sparked this interest. She was just “born with it.”

“I remember going to the gym with my mom in middle school, and in high school I was going to the gym before school or before practice and just loved it. No surprise — I went on to get a degree at Boise State University in kinesiology and dabbled in a lot of (fitness-related) things before ultimately landing on this idea of strength training and muscle mass,” says Smout.

After having children, she noticed how much more difficult it was to get off the floor or pick up her growing toddler. She also noticed the baby carrier felt a lot heavier than it used to be.

She did some research and discovered she wasn’t the only one who struggled with that. She started doing workouts with neighbors and friends in her garage in July 2020, and it quickly grew into a business.

“I saw such a need (for something like this),” Smout says. “To be a part of that, we just love it. It’s the best career ever.”

It’s rewarding for her to get to know clients and help them come up with a fitness and nutrition plan that works for them. She particularly enjoys watching them put their plan into action and “get amazing results.”

“We have a client success manager on staff. Her sole responsibility is to be in charge of our members and their journeys and to make sure they have … a cheerleader by their side to see them to their goals,” says Smout.

Smout’s long-term goal is to help as many women as possible change their lives for the better.
