Delaware’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in August 2022 rose to 4.5%, from 4.4% in July. There were 22,300 unemployed Delawareans in August 2022 compared to 26,400 in August 2021.

The nationa unemployment rate was 3.7% in August 2022, up from 3.5% in July 2022. In August 2021, the US unemployment rate was 5.2%, while Delaware’s rate was 5.3%.

In August 2022, seasonally adjusted nonfarm employment was 464,100, up from 462,200 in July 2022.

Since August 2021, Delaware’s total nonfarm jobs have increased by a net gain of 12,900, a rise of 2.8%. Nationally, jobs during that period increased 3.8%.

The state continues to have a higher jobless rate than the nation as a whole.

In recent decades, Delaware’s unemployment rate had often been lower than the national figure.

In its monthly commentary that accompanies the jobs report, the Delaware Department of Labor noted that wages have risen over the past year.

Also dropping was the workforce participation rate – those working or seeking work. Delaware, like other states is seeing a wave of retirements.
