Delaware’s U.S Sens. Chris Coons and Tom Carper  praised the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act on Sunday.

All 50 Democrats in the Senate, including Carper and Coons, voted for the bill, with Vice President Kamala Harris breaking the tie, since all GOP senators voted no.

The sweeping bill allows the federal government, among other things,  to negotiate drug prices for Medicare recipients, extend tax incentives for buying electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles and upgrade operations and enforcement activities of the Internal Revenue Service.

The bill gave President and former Delaware U.S. Sen. Joe Biden a rare legislative victory going into the mid-term elections.

Biden, who spent Sunday at his Rehoboth home after a bout with Covid-19 , also praised the passage of the bill. (See below).

The legislation had broad support, although business groups opposed corporate tax changes and the pharmaceutical industry waged a campaign to halt drug provisions.

“Passing the Inflation Reduction Act represents a monumental step forward for our nation and our planet. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to have helped craft and pass this landmark legislation to improve the lives of the American people and lead us to a brighter future,”   Carper stated. “Amid unrelenting heatwaves, floods, droughts, and other extreme weather, the Inflation Reduction Act represents the most significant climate legislation in history to pass the Senate. This legislation will unleash the potential of the American clean energy industry, drive down greenhouse gas emissions, reduce energy costs for families, and create millions of good-paying jobs across our country.”

“This historic legislation, which is fully paid for and does not increase taxes on those making less than $400,000 annually, will make a lasting difference in the lives of millions—proof that we can do good and do well at the same time,” stated U.S. Chris Coons.  “I hope to see our colleagues in the House of Representatives quickly pass this legislation so that President Biden can sign it into law—the best is yet to come.”

Coons continued, “Americans will feel the benefits of the Inflation Reduction Act in every aspect of their lives – from their pocketbooks and medicine cabinets to the air they breathe. Many Delawareans have pressed for cuts in prescription drug costs, health care costs and to bring down inflation. With this bill, we will make real progress in meeting these goals.”
