During the Longmont City Council’s open forum Tuesday, no discussion topic is off the table.

“Some years you hear nothing … you get about five, 10 people up there and that’s it,” at-large City Councilman Sean McCoy said of the city’s previous open forums. “Other years, I’ve heard that they’ve gotten bigger.”

The council typically hosts two open forums annually: one in January and another in July.

While anyone can speak for three minutes or less during the “Public Invited to Be Heard” portion of regular City Council meetings, at open forums, residents may address the council for up to five minutes. And, unlike regular meetings, the council may also engage with speakers during the open forum due to its more informal nature.

From the geese population at Loomiller Park to the proposed Bohn Farm development, McCoy has received emails from residents about a variety of issues since being sworn into office last month.

A developer’s desire to build up to 75 townhomes on a nearly 6-acre property along Spruce Avenue has drawn ire from residents of Longmont’s Bohn Farm neighborhood who have called the proposed project too dense.

“We might see some folks … talking about the gun safety issues and our statement around that,” McCoy said. “My big concern there is, is it really coming from Longmont residents?”

During its Jan. 10 regular session, the City Council issued a statement on gun legislation, saying it would “not sit by and wait for another tragedy.”

However, the council has postponed considering any gun safety ordinances until June, at the earliest, in hopes that the Colorado Legislature will address the topic during its session, which started last week.

In addition to hot topics such as gun safety, Ward 3 Councilwoman Susie Hidalgo-Fahring expected to hear concerns from residents about snow removal, namely the lack thereof, during Tuesday’s Open forum.

“There’s been a lot of frustration,” Hidalgo-Fahring said. “In the 20 years that I’ve been in this community, it’s been a while (since) I’ve seen it this bad; where the snow just didn’t melt away after a few days.”

Tuesday’s open forum begins at 7 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, 350 Kimbark St.

People interested in speaking may add their name to a sign-up sheet outside of the Council Chambers beginning at 6:30 p.m.
