HOUSTON – Illinois continued its run at the Houston Tournament at the Cougar Softball Stadium on Saturday with a pair of wins, topping Houston Christian, 4-1, and Houston, 3-1.
GAME ONE
The Illinois softball team took down Houston Christian, 4-1, at the Cougar Softball Stadium on Saturday.
Lauren Wiles earned her first win of the season for Illinois (7-5). The right-hander went 6.1 innings, giving up one run on three hits, while fanning four. Addy Jarvis got the save, her first of the year, when she went 0.2 innings and tallied a strikeout.
At the plate, Delaney Rummell went 1-for-3 on the day with a triple and two RBI. Danielle Davis compiled a noteworthy day at the dish, going 1-for-1 as a pinch hitter with two RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first inning by both teams, the Fighting Illini got on the board in the second frame when a Davis single plated a pair for the Orange and Blue. Rummell continued a rally with a triple into right field, driving home the final runs for the Illini offense.
Holding a 4-0 advantage heading into the seventh, HCU (8-6) spurred a comeback adding an RBI single with one out on the board. Jarvis came out of the bullpen for Illinois, tallying the final two outs to secure the 4-1 victory for the Illini.
GAME NOTES
» The Fighting Illini out-hit the Huskies at a 5-3 clip.
» Illinois went 3-for-8 (.375) with runners in scoring position.
» Jarvis logged he first save and the team’s first save of the season.

GAME TWO
Illinois completed its day with a 3-1 triumph over Houston on Saturday afternoon.
Sydney Sickels got the win for Illinois (8-5), moving the senior to 5-0 on the year. The right-hander pitched a complete game, giving up one run on four hits and striking out five.
The Fighting Illini were led by Paige Berkmeyer, who went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI. Stevie Meade compiled a standout day at the plate as well, going 2-for-2 with a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Fighting Illini got on the scoreboard in the second inning with Davis hitting a leadoff single. Berkmeyer drove home the runner with an RBI single, breaking up the stalemate.
The Fighting Illini expanded their lead in the fourth inning when a Meade single began the at-bat. A ground out by Megan Ward plated Meade from third, giving Illinois the 2-0 edge.
Illinois kept Houston scoreless before building their lead to 3-0 in the sixth inning with Berkmeyer adding her second RBI single of the contest.
The Cougars broke up the shutout with an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh but it was the lone run allowed by the Orange and Blue as the team topped Houston, 3-1.
