A firefighter was hurt and five people now won’t be able to stay in their homes after a destructive fire.

It happened around 6:30 p.m. at a multi-family home on Rosenthal Street in East Hartford and the smoke from it could be seen from around the region.

As crews wrapped up an intense fight against flames in East Hartford, Ky was thankful his mother-in-law and everyone else got out okay.

“Everybody is safe. All my family members are safe. They’re good. We’re blessed,” Ky says.

“The damage is severe. There is severe fire damage on all three floors and water and smoke damage,” East Hartford Deputy Fire Chief Francis Jones explained.

Deputy Chief Jones tells us when crews first arrived, they launched an aggressive attack. Help came from Hartford, Manchester, West Hartford, South Windsor, and New Britain.

“The challenge was the type of construction, older building, balloon frame building, multiple apartments, and heavy volume of fire, and it is a little warm, but our crews rose up to the challenges and did a tremendous job,” Deputy Fire Chief Jones added.

Firefighters say working smoke detectors were important to help everyone get out safely. One firefighter did suffer a minor injury.

The five people who lived in three apartments won’t be able to stay here for now. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
