A man suspected of shooting a person in New York City over a parking spot in 2020 was arrested in Hartford on Tuesday, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
Officers from the Hartford Police Department and members from U.S. Marshals Service fugitive task forces in Connecticut and New York arrested Jason Bernard at a home on Stone Street in Hartford on Tuesday, the U.S. Marshals Service said. He was found under a pile of clothes in the basement of the house.
Bernard allegedly shot a person in the left leg during an argument over a parking spot on Troy Avenue in New York City on Nov. 5, 2020. He evaded arrest by changing his appearance and using fake names since the incident, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.
Law enforcement also arrested Bernard’s childhood friend and Stone Street homeowner, Michael Bembridge, for allegedly providing false statements to police.
Bernard was transported to the Hartford Police Department and charged as a fugitive from justice. He faces attempted murder charges in New York City and is pending extradition, the U.S. Marshals Service said.
Bembridge was charged with hindering prosecution after being transported to the Hartford Police Department, the U.S. Marshals Service said.
