The Lafayette City Council heard an update to a collaborative effort between the City of Lafayette and the City of Louisville to establish a redesign vision for the Highway 42 (95th Street) corridor.

The design proposals, originally presented to the council in April, were created with consideration to the results of field surveys, community engagement windows and stakeholder meetings.

Under the direction of the Lafayette Comprehensive Plan, the city began exploring safe, multimodal travel for all users and types of movements while increasing regional connections. The plan, according to the report, includes policies and strategies aimed at reducing conflict between vehicles and different modes of travel, collaboration with other municipalities, creating improvements with emphasis on the movement and connectivity of people and goods, not just automobiles, and expanding opportunities for bicycle commuting.

Anthony Pratt, a mobility planning and design practice builder for consulting firm Kimley-Horn, recommended a design alternative offering one-way 7- to 8-foot protected bicycle lanes with a separated 2-foot wide pedestrian sidewalk.

“This is the same recommendation that Louisville is moving forward with as well,” said Pratt, specifying one caveat to the intersection on Baseline Road to allow for channelized right turn lanes with protected bicycle lanes.

City Transportation Engineer Michelle Melonakis said the city intends to coordinate with Boulder County to the north and take the section north of Arapahoe into Boulder County.

Melonakis said the plan aligned with the public and council priorities specified in the multimodal transportation plan outreach.

“Overall, this still allows us to pursue that future vision and future potential with a much lower priceline and a more immediate timeline,” Melonakis said. The next steps, she said, would be stakeholder coordination and “ideally before Thanksgiving have a draft and concept plan finalized before the end of the year.”
