I don’t stand out in any way: I’m just about average in everything, with average height and average brunette hair that could use a haircut. If you placed another average government worker in a gray suit next to me, you’d think we were twins. When you’re part of the daily ebb and flow, like I am, it feels like you’ve transformed from a biped into an insect, indistinguishable from the insect crawling right next to you. Each morning, in the midst of this flow, my skin shrivels into a blackish exoskeleton.
The infinite multitude of appendages moves rhythmically as if directed by a constant, monotonous beat of music. Some people call that the heartbeat of the city. They’re wrong. It’s more like the drumbeat for galley slaves.
So I turn around and walk a few steps back, and sure enough, there is that little girl on one of the discarded computer monitors in the pile of computer trash. She gestures for me to come closer like one of those maneki-neko cats, with the palm downward, folding the fingers repeatedly down and back. “Sit down, Sam.” Where? I look around, pull an old dining chair out of the trash, and settle down in front of the slightly tilted computer monitor in the midst of the trash pile.
With great effort, the Creature pulls its clammy body closer and closer to me until the glutinous, translucent tubules of its underbelly cover me and turn into a pouch that encases me entirely. I am gasping for air while the pressure is surging and pulling me toward a large opening in the Creature’s body. The foreboding opening is drawing closer and closer. Have mercy, if this is the end. Let me pass out now. I want this to be over with. But I am still conscious.
