The Dover/Kent County Metropolitan Planning Organization has approved the final document for the Rail Corridor Industrial Land Use Study.

The study points the need to keep property with the potential for rail access available for industrial development.

Linda Parkowski, Executive Director of the Kent Economic Partnership and Choose Central Delaware, said, “The Rail Study will bring awareness of importance of preserving and zoning land along the rail corridor in Kent County for appropriate uses.  There is a finite amount of rail in Central Delaware and this study highlights the need to use it wisely for future generations.”

The draft report can be read here on the Dover Kent MPO website. Any questions or concerns about this study can be directed to James Galvin, Principal Planner at james.galvin@doverkentmpo.org.

The Dover/Kent County Metropolitan Planning Organization is a federally mandated nonprofit that works with local, state and federal governments along with local transportation organizations to ensure that transportation planning and projects are done in keeping with federal law to include the Clean Air Act and the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation Act (FAST).

Interest in rail transport has been building, especially after Carload Express and its Delmarva Central Railroad subsidiary took over operations along the the Delmarva Norfolk Southern line.

Delmarva Central has been active in marketing its services and located its headquarters in the railroad and State Fair town of Harrington in Kent County.

The line supplies grain for the poultry industry along with propane and building materials.

Rail service is expected to be spurred by moves toward an economy that relies less on fossil fuels. Trains are more efficient than trucks in terms of fuel consumption
