I just got on the live edge bandwagon and am wondering if there’s consensus on prepping / finishing the live part?

I’ve been taking a wire brush to it, essentially removing the splintery bits, but not sanding. I see some are sanding it smooth and just keeping the organic shape, but essentially removing the affects.

I got a huge slab of macacauba that still has the brown bark on it. I’d love to keep the bark intact, but it looks pretty brittle, not in danger of falling off, just flaky. Gonna make a pair of table tops out of it, I’ll take any suggestions on finishing that don’t involve epoxy resin. Thanks in advance.
