Bags filled with food and clothes piled high Saturday morning as volunteers collected donations for the Longmont Turkey Turnout, a Thanksgiving season donation drive that has become a staple of the community.
“We’re pleased,” said event organizer Scott Conlin. “We didn’t get as many bags out as last year, so we’re just really happy that we’ve gotten a lot back.”
This year marks the 14th iteration of the Longmont Turkey Turnout. The drive’s goal was to hit 5,000 pounds of food and clothing and receive 100 bikes, which will be donated to local charities.
By Saturday evening, Conlin said the drive took in around 4,750 pounds of food and 2,500 pounds of clothes, surpassing the goal by over 2,000 pounds. The drive also took in 36 bikes and $375 in cash donations.
Volunteers were asked to collect bags of donated food and clothes from around Longmont and bring them to the 400 East Parking Lot on Kimbark Street. Conlin said he was surprised by how many people came to donate items in person Saturday, estimating that there were probably more drop-off donations than ever.
Involvement from Boy and Girl Scouts has been a feature of the drive since the beginning, and Saturday was no exception. Mike and Karen Mancusi helped their 10-year-old daughter Nina, a Girl Scout and Central Elementary School student, pick up and drop off donations.
“She’s been doing this every year since kindergarten,” Mike Mancusi said.
Sam Rieger, a Boy Scout with Troop 64 in Longmont, spent the first part of the day collecting bags around the city and the second part sorting clothes in the Kimbark Street lot. Both tasks are fun in their own ways, he said.
Sam Rieger said his family has participated in the drive for several years but wasn’t able to help out in 2021. His mom, Crystal Rieger, said it’s good to be back this year.
“It’s fun to see all the stuff coming in,” she said.
