Crews early Thursday were fighting a vegetation fire in the area of Highway 18 and Lower Waterman Canyon in San Bernardino that forced evacuations as it grew quickly.

The San Bernardino County Fire Department said at 2:10 a.m. that arriving crews found two to three acres of medium fuel on fire with a rapid rate of spread.

Four strike teams that had been pre-positioned because of high winds were dispatched to the fire.

Structure defenses were being put in place.

KTLA reported evacuations were in place as the fire quickly grew to an estimated 200 acres. CBS Los Angeles reported an evacuation center opened at Pacific High School in San Bernardino.
