NEWS & NOTES

  • The Rainbow Wahine split their weekend set of Big West games for the sixth time this season, losing to rival Long Beach State 48-47 on Thursday, followed by a fourth-quarter surge past CSU Bakersfield Saturday for a 65-52 victory.
  • Sophomore Lily Wahinekapu comes into the week ranked at No. 13 in the Big West with 11.6 points per game, as she has scored 10 or more in 11 consecutive games.
  • UH sits at No. 4 in the Big West Standings, a full game behind UC Santa Barbara and a half-game ahead of UC Davis with four games left.
  • The ‘Bows are in the midst of four games in seven days for the second time this season. After two games, UH is 1-1, and in the prior stretch this season from Jan. 14th to the 21st, they went 2-2.
  • Both UCR and UCI were a part of that gruesome stretch, and each game was decided by four points in Honolulu. UH came away with a 55-51 win over the Highlanders while losing in overtime to UCI 71-67.

SO MANY FREE THROWS
On February 20th against CSU Bakersfield, 53 fouls were called throughout the game. As a result, the ‘Bows attempted 39 free throws hitting 31 for a .795% or 80% if you ask a math wizard. Games, where UH shoots 30 or more free throws have been somewhat of a rarity as it’s the second time this season, while the ‘Bows tallied five a year ago. Before the 2021-2022 season, the five seasons before, UH accounted for five games where they shot 30 more from the charity stripe. The 2015-16 season was the last time UH had five games of such high volume from the line in a single season. It was also the last time the ‘Bows shot more than 39 from the line, as they shot 40 against none other than CSUB on November 27th, 2015, in a 74-60 victory.

MIX AND MATCH
Throughout the season, UH has used 10 different starting lineups to find the right matchup for their opponent on any given night while also dealing with three season-ending injuries. Two players remain consistent as sophomore guard Lily Wahinekapu and graduate Kallin Spiller have started in every game this year. Spiller enters the week on an impressive stretch of 37 consecutive starts. Both sophomore guard Kelsie Imai and sophomore forward Meilani McBee have established themselves as starters, each starting in over 10 straight games. The fifth spot has been inconsistent as graduate forward McKenna Haire and freshman center Imani Perez have been given the nod lately. The odd one is sophomore Daejah Phillips, the second leading scorer on the team with 10.6 points per game, who started 14 of the first 15 games. On January 16th, she requested to come off the bench and has done so ever since.
