A federal map shows that a severe drought continues in a portion of Sussex County, despite rain earlier in the week.

The severe designation covers an area along the coast and across the bay includes the Cape May area. While the area is known for the beach and rapid development, it still has a lot of agricultural land.

A larger portion of Sussex remains under a moderate drought designation.

Rain did move an area around Smyna into the “abnormally dry” category from a moderate drought.

Agriculture officials said the lack of widespread soaking rainfall led to a patchwork of drought conditions in Sussex, with some farms receiving sufficient rain and others missing smaller storms.

Northern Castle County is seeing more normal conditions, although rain has been sporadic in the last couple of weeks.

Northern Delaware did receive a couple of inches from storms earliier in the week.

No big storms are predicted in the next few days.
