Shelton Police announced the unexpected death of a 15-year veteran of the department in a Facebook post on Thursday night.

“It is with deep regret and profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Officer Jesse Butwell. Officer Butwell was 41 years old and a 15-year veteran of the police department. He was the department’s training officer. Condolences to his parents and family,” the statement read.

Shelton Lt. Robert Kozlowsky described Butwell as a “dedicated officer who had a positive attitude and cared for others.”

He said that Butwell was “always willing” to lend a hand to help his co-workers, which was one of the main reasons he was picked to be the training officer.

“More importantly, he developed close friendships with many of his coworkers and was well-liked by all members of the department,” Kozlowsky said.

Kozlowsky said that Butwell was an avid fisherman and ice fisherman who loved the outdoors.

The Shelton Police Association started a GoFundMe to help fund a memorial service for him.

Butwell was mainly a day-shift officer who recently switched to the training division to help out the department, according to the GoFundMe post.

“Jesse Butwell was one of the best guys, and best officers Shelton had to offer,” the GoFundMe said.

There is no word yet on his cause of death.
