The south side of Heil Valley Ranch will remain closed through spring due to instability in the upper watershed and the complexity of recovery projects after last year’s Calwood Fire.

More than 8 miles of trails at the Geer Canyon access, including all park amenities at the Corral trailhead, the main trailhead, the southern section of the Wapiti Trail, the Lichen Loops, the Overland Trail, the Schoolhouse Loop and the Grindstone Quarry Trail, will remain closed.

According to a news release from Boulder County Parks & Open Space, weather and burning modeling indicate that the burn area might continue to see significant flooding and debris flows during the late summer and fall with impacts to park amenities, roads and downstream communities.

Despite the continued closures, nearly 11 miles have been cleared and are open to the public via the Picture Rock trailhead near Lyons. Open trails include the Picture Rock Trail, the Wild Turkey Loop, the Ponderosa Loop and the northern 1.2 miles of the Wapiti Trail, the release states.

The continued recovery work includes construction of debris flow mitigation structures along Geer Canyon; construction and installation of three pedestrian bridges; and road culvert replacement.
