Two pedestrians were killed in Stamford early Saturday morning after a Greenwich resident allegedly hit them with his vehicle and attempted to flee the scene on foot, according to the Stamford Police Department.

Police said they believe the two pedestrians, both 25-year-old Stamford residents, were using the crosswalk to walk westbound across Washington Boulevard at Main Street at about 2:05 a.m. Saturday, when a 24-year-old Greenwich resident allegedly struck them with his 2022 Mercedes as he traveled southbound on Washington Boulevard.

Police said the force of the vehicle’s impact threw both pedestrians into the northbound lane of Washington Boulevard south of Main Street.

Officers said the vehicle operator continued to drive for a short distance before stopping just north of 888 Washington Boulevard and allegedly fleeing the scene on foot.

Stamford Police Department officers said that when they arrived at the scene, witnesses pointed police in the direction that the operator fled. According to the department’s statement, Officer Nick Gelonisi found the suspected driver hiding behind a dumpster behind a building on Relay Place.

Police said they detained the driver at the scene, but, at this time, no charges are filed against him.

“Both pedestrians were transported to Stamford Hospital where they were pronounced dead from the injuries suffered in the collision,” the Stamford Police Department said in the statement. “The operator of the vehicle was also transported to Stamford Hospital for claims of minor, non-life threatening injuries.”

The vehicle was heavily damaged, according to the statement.

The department’s Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad is investigating the collision for speed, in addition to several other factors, police said.

On Saturday morning, Washington Boulevard was closed to traffic for six hours while the department conducted its on-scene investigation.

Stamford Police Officers Lindsey Yanicky, Kerilyn Whitehead and Cory Fisher are leading the open investigation. Police ask anyone with information on the collision to contact the Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Squad at (203) 977-4712.
