After five seasons of college football at two different schools, Jordan Domineck had the opportunity to move once again.
Provided with a bonus season because of the COVID pandemic in 2020, Domineck knew exactly what he wanted and he feels he got it with the Colorado Buffaloes.
“I have one year to make it big if I want to make it to the NFL,” Domineck told BuffZone after he decided to transfer to CU in January. “With this coaching staff and the way these people are out here, this is a no-nonsense place, I’ll tell you that. It’s a no nonsense place and everybody has to be ready for what happens.”
A 6-foot-3, 250-pound edge defender, Domineck played last season at Arkansas and the previous four seasons at Georgia Tech. Now that he’s been through most of spring practices with the Buffs, Domineck is experiencing the no-nonsense approach of first-year head coach Deion Sanders and his staff.
“Being here at Colorado, it’s really a lot more intense with the practices, the tempo, the speed of the practices compared to other schools that I’ve been to,” he said. “I’m not saying that the work is a lot harder or a lot easier; not at all, but just the pace that we move at with the practices, the tempo, the way these coaches are making sure everybody’s on the right thing. Nobody cares about your feelings. We’re here to work and I love that. I love that environment.”
Domineck has thrived in his previous environments, as well.
At Arkansas last year, he recorded 34 tackles, 9.5 tackles for loss and 7.5 sacks. In 31 games (15 starts) at Georgia Tech, he had 101 tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss and 9.0 sacks.
CU was last in the country in sacks (nine) last season, the only team with fewer than 14. Domineck is adapting to his new environment as he hopes to boost the Buffs’ pass rush.
“It took me a little minute to adjust to it since I was so used to different things, different coaching styles and everything,” Domineck said. “But being here with (defensive ends coach Nick) Williams, being under (coordinator Charles) Kelly, under Coach Prime, it’s just a whole different feeling and a whole different environment and I’m just loving it. I’ve adapted to it and I feel like I’m starting to find my own within that process.”
That’s evident in that Domineck earned his number this past week, becoming one of the first nine players on the team to earn a number. He picked No. 44, in part because a good friend, Quez Jackson, wore that number at Georgia Tech. Domineck also likes the No. 4, so two of them was better than one. That fact that he earned a number was what mattered most, however.
“I’m happy. I got my number,” he said. “I feel like I’ve earned it and now I’ve just got to keep earning it every day.”
Domineck and the Buffs were off on Sunday, but return to the field on Monday as they prepare for Saturday’s spring game at Folsom Field.
Ludwick to transfer
Redshirt freshman edge defender Kaden Ludwick announced on Sunday that he has entered the NCAA transfer portal.
A 6-foot-5, 230-pounder from Clackamas, Ore., Ludwick was a three-star recruit in CU’s 2022 class. He redshirted last season, but played one defensive snap.
Ludwick is the sixth Buff to enter the transfer portal this week.
