A man who got out of his vehicle after a wrong-way crash on Interstate 84 was struck and killed by an impaired driver who fled the scene early Saturday, police said.
Westley Clemente-Fuentes, 29, of East Hartford, was driving his car in the wrong direction on I-84 east near Exit 52 in East Hartford when he struck a concrete barrier about 2:59 a.m., according to Connecticut State Police Troop H.
Clemente-Fuentes, who had two passengers in his car, got out of the car when it came to a stop in the left lane after the crash, police said.
While he was standing there, 21-year-old Ileaha Porter of East Hartford struck him and the passenger side of his car and reportedly drove off. Clemente-Fuentes was rushed to Hartford Hospital with serious injuries and was pronounced dead, police said.
The passengers, a 23-year-old woman from Hartford and a 21-year-old woman from Hartford, were not injured, police said.
Investigators later found Porter at Manchester Memorial Hospital. She allegedly showed signs of impairment from either alcohol or drug use and then failed a sobriety test. She was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, police said.
She was released from custody after posting a $10,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear in court in Hartford on Oct. 23, records show.
