SOMIS, Calif. – The University of Hawai’i men’s golf team is in contention after the first two rounds of the Bill Cullum Invitational Monday at The Saticoy Club.
 
The Rainbow Warriors sit in third place after carding rounds of 294 and 293 for a 587 total, nine strokes behind leader and host CSUN (578). North Dakota State is seven strokes behind the Matadors at 585.
 
Individually, UH’s Blaze Akana and Josh Hayashida are 1-over 145 and tied for eighth place, three strokes behind leader David McDowell of UC San Diego (142). Hayashida carded the low round of the day for the Rainbow Warriors with a 3-under 69 in Round 1.
 
Freshman Dane Watanabe posted a second round 70 for a 149 total and is tied for 28th place. Kolbe Irei shot 77 and 73 and is tied for 33rd at 150 while Tyler Ogawa carded consecutive rounds of 77 and is tied for 58th at 154.
 
The tournament, which features six Big West teams, concludes with Tuesday’s final round.
