HONOLULU — The University of Hawai’i women’s soccer team closes the 2023 regular season on the road at Long Beach State on Thursday, Oct. 26 at George Allen Field in Long Beach, Calif. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Pacific Time / 4 p.m. Hawaii time. The match will be streamed on ESPN+.

The Rainbow Wahine clinched a spot in the six-team bracket for the Big West Championship last week. UH will play an opening-round match on Oct. 29 with the opponent and site to be determined by Thursday’s results.

ON THE PITCH

• The Rainbow Wahine have secured a place in the Big West Championship for the second time since joining the conference in 2012 and the first time since 2019. UH enters the week tied with UC Irvine for fifth place in the Big West standings with 13 points. Fourth-place Long Beach State is just ahead with 14 points. The No. 1 and No. 2 seeds receive a bye into the semifinal round set for No. 2. In the opening round on Oct. 29, the No. 3 seed will host the No. 6 seed and the No. 4 seed will host the No. 5 seed with the winners advancing to the semifinals hosted by the top seeded team. The championship match is set for Nov. 5.

• The ‘Bows split their final homestand of the regular season with a 1-0 win over UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 19 and a 2-1 loss to Cal Poly on Senior Night on Sunday. UH went 4-3-1 at Waipi’o Peninsula Soccer Stadium in the regular season.

• Thursday’s matchup will feature the top two teams in the Big West in scoring average. Long Beach State leads the conference with 1.833 goals per game (33 total). UH is next with 1.714 goals per game (24 total). In conference matches, UH and Beach are tied for third with 13 goals each (1.444 per game).

• UH sophomore Cate Sheahan led the Rainbow Wahine attack last week, scoring both of the team’s goals in the homestand. She scored the go-ahead goal in the 76th minute off an assist from Eliza Ammendolia against UCSB. She gave UH the lead in the 47th minute against Cal Poly with an assist from Fabiola Zamora.  Sheahan leads the team with four assists and now has three goals on the season and moved into second on the team with 10 points this season.

• UH’s 24 goals through 14 games this season marks the highest total since the ‘Bows scored 30 in 17 games in 2018. A total of 16 Rainbow Wahine players have at least one point this season. Nine have scored and another seven have assists.  UH forward Amber Gilbert continues to lead the ‘Bows with six goals this season and has 10 for her career. She leads the team with 12 points this season.

 

• Long Beach State leads the series with UH 10-2-4 and hasn’t lost to the Rainbow Wahine in the last 13 meetings. … UH last defeated LBSU on Sept. 13, 2004 (1-0). The Beach is 10-0-3 against UH since.
