KAPOLEI, O’ahu – A trio of University of Hawai’i men’s golfers shot under par in the opening round of the inaugural Kapolei Invitational Tuesday at the Kapolei Golf Club.
 
Kolbe Irei carded a 3-under 69 to pace the team while Blaze Akana and Garrett Takeuchi each fired 2-under 70. Irei is tied for 28th while Akana and Takeuchi are tied for 37th heading into Wednesday’s second round.
 
As a tea, the Rainbow Warriors are tied for 10th at 7-under 281. Florida Gulf Coast leads the 19-team at 20-under 268 followed by Baylor (269), Texas State (271), UC Irvine (272), and Augusta (272). Individually, Loyola Marymount’s Riley Lewis and UC Irvine’s Jason Tang share the lead at 7-under 65 while a group of eight golfers are one stroke back.
 
Isaiah Kanno (72; t-67th) and Josh Hayashida (75; t-94th) also competed for UH.
 
Four others competed as individuals – James Whitworth (70; t-37th), Tyler Ogawa (72; t-67th), Dane Watanabe (73; t-82nd), and Anson Cabello (77; t-103rd).
 
The tournament continues with Round 2 on Wednesday beginning with tee times off No. 1 and No. 10 at 8:00 a.m.
