Looking Back on Our Year of Rest — Homesteading Family

Last year, we made a simple but intentional decision: we wanted to slow down. We weren’t quitting homesteading, we weren’t going to stop caring for our land or animals, but we wanted to create a pace that felt more sustainable for our family. We called it a Year of Rest.

What we learned quickly is that rest doesn’t mean doing nothing. A homestead always has a baseline of work. Animals still need care. Life still shows up. What changed wasn’t the responsibility; it was what we chose not to add.

We intentionally stepped away from big, optional projects. That alone brought more margin into our days and changed the feel of our weeks, especially in winter.

Of course, real life had a surprise for us. Our daughter got married, and we built a cabin in a short window so she and her husband could live on the property. It wasn’t restful, but it was deeply worth it.

That project fit our generational vision, and saying yes to it felt right.

The biggest takeaway from the year wasn’t about rest at all. It was about honesty.

If you’re heading into a new season already feeling stretched thin, our encouragement is simple: pause and take stock before making more plans. A slower, steadier pace might be exactly what your homestead (and your family) needs.
