As Duane “Keffe D” Davis stands trial accused of orchestrating the killing of Tupac Shakur nearly 30 years ago near the Las Vegas Strip, one of the most prominent figures tied to the case is speaking out.
Imprisoned Death Row Records CEO Marion “Suge” Knight, who was in the vehicle at the time of Shakur’s killing, has previously made clear that he does not want to be involved in the case, warning prosecutors and defense attorneys that they’ll regret dragging him into it.
Knight, who played college football at UNLV, was headed to a nightclub with Shakur when their car was shot at. Knight was grazed by a bullet or shrapnel, according to The Associated Press.
In his memoir, “Compton Street Legend,” Davis describes Knight and himself as the “only living eyewitnesses to what truly happened.”
“Like two rams locking horns, Suge and I looked each other dead in the eye,” he writes when describing the moments right before the shooting, AP reported.
Speaking to TMZ by phone Tuesday from prison, Knight told the media outlet that lawyers for Davis offered him $1 million to say the 63-year-old man was not in the vehicle from which shots were fired at Shakur.
Knight didn’t elaborate further on which lawyer allegedly made the offer.
“Keffe D’s attorneys were like, ‘Hey, we’ll give you half a ticket. We’ll give you a million dollars,’” Knight told TMZ.
“I told them, look, my loyalty and love for Tupac can’t be compromised for nobody,” Knight added.
When asked to clarify his comments, Knight told TMZ’s Charles Latibeaudiere and Harvey Levin that the attorneys offered him $1 million to say that Davis wasn’t there and wasn’t in the car.
Knight is currently housed at San Diego’s Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility, where he is serving a 28-year prison sentence for running over and killing a Compton businessman outside a burger stand in January 2015.
