ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – University of Hawai’i senior Blaze Akana carded rounds of 74 and 70 on the first day of the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, Monday at the UNM Championship Course.
 
The Honolulu native posted nine birdies on the day including six during a 2-under second round. He is currently tied for 34th place heading into Tuesday’s final round.
 
As a team, the Rainbow Warriors are 18th in the 20-team field after rounds of 299 and 296 for a 598 total. Texas Tech leads the tournament at 558, two strokes ahead of host New Mexico (560). San Francisco (562), San Diego State (563), and UNLV (567) round out the top five.
 
TTU’s Tyran Snyders is the clubhouse leader at 9-under 135 followed by a group of four golfers who are two strokes back.
 
A pair of UH freshmen are several strokes behind Akana. ‘Iolani School graduate Dane Watanabe is 4-over (72-76) while Kamehameha Schools-Maui graduate Anson Cabello is 7-over (77-74) in their first collegiate tournaments.
 
Also competing for the Rainbow Warriors are Kolbe Irei (76-76) and Garrett Takeuchi (79-76).
 
The tournament concludes on Tuesday with a 7:45 a.m. MT shotgun start.
