Alabama Power Co. on Tuesday announced a rate increase for its customers, effective with their January bills.

A news release from the company said the rate hike, which “will be about $6.81 for the typical residential customer using 1,000-kilowatt hours per month,” was approved earlier in the day by Alabama’s Public Service Commission.

The increase was primarily blamed, according to the company, on “compliance with federal requirements, as well as unprecedented inflation and economic conditions.”

The company said in the news release, “These federal mandates and regulations, with which the company and utilities across the country must comply, continue to put pressure on customer costs.”
