Beebe Healthcare  has signed a long-term lease for the former Weis store in the Rehoboth Marketplace shopping center.

The project is still in the planning phase, Beebe spokesman Ryan Marshall said.

Beebe’s plan is to convert the building into a mix of medical offices, population health services, and warehouse space. Beebe has undergone a major expansion in the fast-growing coastal area of Sussex County. Beebe operates a hospital in Lewes and a health care campus near Rehoboth.

The expansion aligns with our recently released five-year strategic plan that emphasizes access and a patient-centric experience, Marshall said.

“This expansion adds services and care access points to a community that is rapidly growing in Sussex County, and Beebe is focused on growing in areas so that we can care for the people who live, work, visit and seek care in our community,” Marshall said.

The Weis store closed last year after a long run. The store operated for decades as a Food Lion. However,  Food Lion sold store sites in Sussex County to Weis as part of an antitrust agreement when the Belgian owner of Food Lion merged with Netherlands-based  Ahold, the operator of Giant and other grocery chains in the U.S.
