Bill to limit purchases of new public land advances in House after ea...

Legislation that would prevent state conservation officials from acquiring new public land at auction — or through donations from certain groups that obtain it at auction — was advanced by an Iowa House subcommittee Tuesday.

Senate File 2324 was approved by the Senate two weeks ago with a 30-17 vote and moved to the House. It has been widely condemned by conservation, environmental and hunting organizations for its potential to limit public land acquisitions and the economic benefits they create for rural Iowa.

A similar bill introduced in the House was rejected in early February by a subcommittee and is no longer available for consideration. But the Senate version was recommended 2-1 by a different House subcommittee on Tuesday that was led by the bill’s author, Rep. Austin Harris, R-Moulton.
