Several Vending machine providers that have an installed base of more than a million built vending machines have signed up for Civic Pay. if you haven’t heard of Civic Pay, then let us give you a quick summary. The blockchain payment platform combines identity and age verification, QR code mobile payments, loyalty and rewards.
The Civic Pay platform uses the identity and age verification, payment and rewards process into a single transaction.
In order to use this vending machine, customers must initially go through a one-time online identity verification check using a document providing proof of their date of birth.
This will enable the Civic Pay app to interact through a QR code reader on the vending machines to confirm that the person holding the phone is over the required age to buy a certain product like alcohol.
Payment is taken through the app and any loyalty rewards are issued and the product is dispensed.
The technology was initially announced last year in a vending machine where the consumer bought a can of Budweiser beer. Once the person’s age had been verified, the can was dispensed. You can watch the video here.

We’re thrilled to partner with leaders in the automated retail industry, and working together, we look forward to making digital identity available and usable.”
The vending machine operators backed the project including Aaeon, AR Systems, Fastcorp Vending, Greenbox, Global Vending Group, RAC Health & Wellness, Invenda, IVM, IVS, The-Venders, Wemp and SandenVendo.
