Boulder is examining how it can adjust its flood mitigation plan for South Boulder Creek in such a way to get the University of Colorado Boulder on board.

CU Boulder owns a 308-acre parcel of land south of Boulder, and it has agreed to donate 80 acres to flood mitigation there, so long as 129 acres are left to be developed. The city’s current plan leaves less than 100 of those 308 acres for CU to develop.

“Are there things you can do that still achieve flood mitigation but gets CU closer to 129 buildable acres?” Councilman Bob Yates asked staff Tuesday.

The Colorado Department of Transportation’s input last week helped to narrow the options and trade-offs, Mayor Suzanne Jones said.

Staff agreed to examine options “between the goalposts” that allow for needed flood mitigation, protect open space and give CU more developable acreage before council’s next discussion on the matter on July 16 — though they cautioned that engineering design or detailed analysis could not be complete by then. Council and CU also are scheduled for a study session discussion on Aug. 13.
