
When 3 p.m. CDT Wednesday arrived, wide receiver Calvin Ridley had not signed a contract extension with the Jacksonville Jaguars. That made the former Alabama standout an NFL unrestricted free agent and set the final compensation for his trade from the Atlanta Falcons to Jacksonville.
When Jacksonville acquired him from the Atlanta Falcons on Nov. 1, 2022, Ridley was serving an NFL suspension. The compensation for parting with Ridley amounted to two draft picks. But because of the circumstances, their values came with conditions.
The NFL had suspended Ridley indefinitely on March 7, 2022, for betting on league games.
When Ridley was reinstated on March 6, 2023, Atlanta got Jacksonville’s fifth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft instead of a sixth-rounder.
The other draft pick started as a 2024 fourth-rounder. But it would upgrade to a third-round selection if Ridley played 60 percent of the Jaguars’ offensive snaps or recorded 75 receptions or 1,000 receiving yards in 2023.
