HONOLULU—The University of Hawai’i softball team fell in their Fall Preseason Classic opener to Chaminade in eight innings, 5-3.
The Silverswords rallied for three runs in the seventh to force extra innings, then went ahead with two runs in the eighth on Thursday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Hawai’i scored a single run in each of the first three innings. In the first, with runners at the corners, UH’s Chloe Borges drove in Ka’ena Keliinoi from third with a single to left.
In the second, Maya Nakamura launched a solo home run to center to give the ‘Bows a 2-0 lead and in the third, pinch runner Keely Kai scored on Borges second RBI-single of the game to left for a 3-0 lead.
The score would remain the same until the top of the seventh. UH got the first two outs to start the inning, then the Silverswords got a walk and a single before Bailey Jacobsen hit a three-run home run to tie the game at 3-3.
In the eighth with the international tie-breaker in place, Chaminade with runners at second and third and no outs, Kea Takemura-Brehme grounded out to second to drive in the lead runner from third and Kobe Brown followed with a single to second to score the final run, 5-3.
Hawai’i’s sophomore starting pitcher Key-Annah Campbell threw five, shut out innings, allowing just two hits with five strikeouts and no walks. Reliever McKenna Kostyszyn took the loss, giving up five runs on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
Chaminade’s Ashley Ogata threw a complete, eight inning game, holding UH to three runs on nine hits with a walk and four strikeouts.
In the loss, junior centerfielder Chloe Borges went 3-for-4 with two RBI and senior second baseman Maya Nakamura was 2-for-3 with a home run.
