
Iowa Democratic voters are against abolishing income tax in the state, according to a new Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa poll, even as two-thirds of residents support the notion of gradually winding down the levy until it is eliminated.
Asked if they either support or oppose to “gradually reduce the state’s individual income tax rate until it is eliminated,” 44 percent of Democratic voters opposed the proposal. Overall 62 percent of voters in the state approved the move. Also positive on the policy were 74 percent of Republicans and 42 percent of Democrats.
The survey was conducted from February 25 to 28 with a sample size of 805 and a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percent.
The poll results comes amid discussions in the state about reducing taxes. One plan under consideration is from Governor Kim Reynolds, who is looking to cut income tax from the top rate of 5.7 percent to a flat rate of 3.65 percent in 2024 and reduce it further to 3.5 percent the following year.
