Electric Fan Giveaway to Help City Seniors Beat the Summer Heat
June 12, 2024

The City of Wilmington is launching its annual electric fan distribution program to assist senior residents in coping with the summer heat. Mayor Purzycki and the Mayor’s Office of Constituent Services announced that starting Tuesday, June 11, seniors can receive free electric fans. The distribution will take place at the Mayor’s Office of Constituent Services, located on the 7th floor of the Redding Government Building at 800 North French Street.

Fans will be available every Tuesday through Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

#### Eligibility Criteria:

– Recipients must reside within the City of Wilmington and be at least 65 years old.

– Proof of age and residency, such as a valid state ID, is required.

– Seniors who received a free fan in 2023 are not eligible this year.

Residents are cautioned against using electric fans when the outside temperature exceeds 95 degrees Fahrenheit, as this can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses. Fans may provide a false sense of comfort by circulating hot air, which does not effectively lower body temperature.

#### Heat Safety Tips:

– **Check on Neighbors**: Pay special attention to seniors, families with young children, individuals with special needs, and those living alone.

– **Never Leave Anyone in a Parked Car**: Do not leave children, the elderly, or pets unattended in vehicles, even for a few minutes. The temperature inside can rise rapidly, leading to brain damage or death.

– **Stay Hydrated**: Drink 1 to 1.5 quarts of water daily to prevent dehydration. Fruit juices are also good options. Avoid alcohol and caffeine as they can dehydrate the body.

– **Wear Appropriate Clothing**: Opt for loose, lightweight, and light-colored clothes. If you must go outside during the hottest part of the day, wear a wide-brimmed hat and take breaks in the shade.

– **Avoid Overexertion**: Limit strenuous activities, especially during peak heat. If you must be active outdoors, do so early in the morning or late in the evening and take frequent breaks.

– **Seek Air-Conditioned Spaces**: Stay in cool environments as much as possible. Public places like libraries, malls, and community centers can provide relief from the heat.

– **Recognize Heat-Related Illnesses**: Be aware of symptoms of heat exhaustion, heat cramps, and heat stroke. If someone shows signs of heat stroke, move them to a cool, shaded area and call 9-1-1 immediately.
