Erie was awarded $55,000 from the Government Alliance on Race and Equity to support equitable business ownership in town.
Erie is one of six municipalities to receive GARE grant funding, including New York City and Chicago.
The grant money will support the Erie Racial Equity Pilot, which will create and develop a “business incubator program.” The incubator model will create a space for business amenities, meeting space and educational business tools and services. The pilot program and Erie town staff will work with racially marginalized residents to shape and guide the purpose of the pilot program.
According to the Erie website, the town recognizes the importance of “nurturing a healthy entrepreneurial ecosystem that focuses on eliminating structural racism.”
