Maui County shelters remained open as thousands were displaced in fires that scorched Maui.
The death toll was at least 93 people as of Saturday night.
Gov. Josh Green said the event was “likely the largest natural disaster” in state history. Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke issued a state emergency proclamation early Wednesday.
Fast-moving flames were fueled by the dry winds of a hurricane passing south of the islands. A normal trade wind pattern was restored by Friday and expected to continue through Monday, National Weather Service officials said early Friday in a forecast.

Kahului Airport remained open and outgoing flights were available, but officials asked visitors to refrain from traveling to areas affected by wildfire.
More than 1,400 people spent Friday night in county emergency shelters and organizations across Hawaii have mobilized to help fire victims. Learn more about where you can make donations of cash, food or supplies.
Anyone experiencing an emergency in West Maui was urged to call the Lahaina Police Department at 808-661-4441, as 911 services were not available in the area.
Lahaina did not have landline or cellphone service as of Thursday, but as of Friday, some cell signal was available in West Maui, the county said. People in the area were advised to text message if calls were not going through.

Maui Fire Containment Latest
The fire that leveled much of Lahaina town was 85% contained as of Friday evening, according to Maui County. The Pulehu fire blazing mauka of Kihei was 100% contained Saturday and the Upcountry fire was 50% contained.
Another fire that cropped up Friday evening, north of Puukolii, was quickly contained and extinguished on Saturday. The county had set up a temporary fueling station in the area.
Maui Evacuation Shelters
Emergency shelters do not have items such as bedding and toiletries available for evacuees, according to Maui County. Pet owners must restrain their animals.
The following shelters were open:
- Kahului: King’s Cathedral Church; The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; and Grace Bible Church.
- Kihei: South Maui Gymnasium
- Makawao: Oskie Rice Arena is for farm and ranch animals only.
- Pukalani: Hannibal Tavares Community Center.
- Wailuku: War Memorial Complex.
Maui Evacuee Shuttles
Anyone staying in shelters at the War Memorial Gymnasium, King’s Cathedral and Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is able to take a free on-demand shuttle for rides to most Central Maui shopping centers and medical facilities from 8 a.m. until the last pickup at 8 p.m.
Call Roberts Hawaii at 808-871-4838 for reservations, the county said in a statement.
Passengers can only bring items they can carry. Wheelchairs can be accommodated.
Maui Evacuation Orders
Visitors with transportation were asked to leave Maui as quickly as possible, the county said Wednesday.
Maui County fire officials recommended residents of the following areas participate in proactive evacuations:
- Kula: Holopuni and Pulehi roads.
Evacuations also occurred in the following areas:
- West side: Lahainaluna Road, Hale Mahaolu, Kelawea Mauka and Lahaina Bypass;
- Upcountry: Piʻiholo and Olinda roads, Kulalani Drive and Kulalani Circle subdivision; Kula 200 and Hanamu Road areas.
Locating Maui Evacuees
The county has opened a family assistance center for people looking for loved ones who have not been accounted for. Visit the Kahului Community Center (275 Uhu St.) from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday.
Anyone looking to find someone affected by the fires may also call the American Red Cross hotline at 1-800-733-2767.

More Evacuee Resources
- Health clinics operated by Kaiser Permanente will open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Lahaina Gateway Center, Napili Park and the Lahaina Civic Center (Lahaina Comprehensive Health).
- Two WiFi trucks with charging stations are located at Napili Park and Honokowai Park.
- Gasoline is available at Ohana Fuels/Minit Stop (333 Dairy Road) in Kahului and Kahana Gateway Shell (27 Hoohui Road) in Lahaina.
Maui Road Closures
Lahaina town remained barricaded as of Saturday morning. People were asked to stay out of the area due to safety hazards, and wear a mask and gloves due to toxic particles from places that were still smoldering.
- All roads in Lahaina town, bordered by Wahikuli Wayside Park to the north and Kai Hele Ku Street to the south.
- Honoapiilani Highway is only open for vehicles leaving Lahaina.
- Kealaloa Avenue, Haleakala Highway closed at Lower Kimo Road.
- Haleakala Highway at Kula Highway.

Fire Victim Supply Distribution
The following supply distribution for opportunities were available for Maui fire victims in the Lahaina area as of Saturday (learn where to donate money or goods):
- Napili Plaza (5095 Napilihau St.): Food, water and more.
- Lahaina Gateway shopping center (305 Keawe St.): Open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to distribute food, water, toiletries, canned goods, diapers, baby formula, clothing and pet food.
Maui School And Bus Closures
- Lahaina’s four public school campuses remain closed through Aug. 18.
- Upcountry, South Maui and Central Maui schools will begin phased reopenings from Aug. 14 to 17. More details.
- Kihei Regional Park Activities. The gym is being used as an evacuation center.
- All Boys & Girls Clubs of Maui Clubhouses.
- Maui Bus: Lahaina Islander Route #20, Lahaina Villager Route #23, Kaanapali Islander Route #25, and West Maui Islander Route #28; Maui Bus ADA Paratransit Service; Maui Economic Opportunity Human Service Transportation; and Maui Bus Commuter Services.
Potable Water Tankers
Kula residents may have low to no water pressure due to damage to power lines to pumping stations, the county said Thursday. Water tankers have been set up in the following Kula areas:
- Kula Fire Station.
- Rice Park.
- Crater Road.
- L. Kula Highway.
- Copp Road.
Water tankers have also been set up in West Maui:
- Maui Preparatory Academy.
- Lahaina Baseyard.
- Lahaina Post Office.
