NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTNH) — Officials provided an update about a church collapse on Monday, a few days after the historic structure fell.
New London Mayor Michael Passero said that there is no evidence that the air around the area is unsafe, and said that work is being done to retrieve a crucifix that remains underneath the rubble.
The collapse happened at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of State Street and Union Street, forever changing New London’s skyline. No one was injured. A woman who was in the church at the time was able to get out safely.
Security footage captured the moment the church collapsed.
Demolition began on Saturday and continued through the weekend.
Two congregations shared the church — Engaging Heaven and the former First Congregational Church. Engaging Heaven owns the building.
Passero said that the rubble is considered hazardous waste until proven otherwise. He said that companies have already contacted Engaging Heaven about the granite.
